Nurturing Conscious Consumption: Finding Balance in Media Consumption and Music
In a world inundated with media, from television shows to music awards ceremonies, the balance between staying informed and preserving our mental and emotional well-being can feel like a delicate tightrope walk. Recent commentary on events like the Grammys has sparked conversations about the impact of media consumption on our psyche and how we can navigate these waters with mindfulness and intentionality.
The Grammys, a hallmark event celebrating musical achievements and creativity, often serves as a reflection of our cultural landscape. However, as I delved deeper into the spectacle, the messages being conveyed and their resonance in our lives were concerning.
For those who witnessed Travis Scott’s performance, which included the slamming of chairs, and other displays of theatrical violence, there’s a recognition of the fine line between artistic expression and the potential normalization of aggressive behavior. While I’ve recently learned that Travis has some deeper messages in his work that are for the betterment of humanity, my thoughts remain the same. Because what we see visually makes a tremendous impact. I hope he went on a media blitz to educate EVERYONE about a deeper message.
Another award-winning artist acted out killing her ex by slicing his throat on stage. The set of a young performer included blood down her face and the entire wall behind her bleeding as she sang her tune. Many individuals were not impacted as they have become numb to these acts of violence and illegal behavior as entertainment. This alone is concerning.
It’s in moments like these that the importance of conscious media consumption comes to the forefront. I haven’t had a TV since 2005 due to a fundamental desire for self-awareness and intentional living. Disengaging from mainstream media has helped me be more peaceful and mindful of the subconscious programs being planted in our minds.
The power of media should not be underestimated, as it shapes our perceptions, beliefs, and values. From the lyrics of songs to the images on our screens, every piece of media we consume leaves an imprint on our consciousness — a fact that underscores the need for discernment and critical reflection. Society has become more violent than ever before — we should not be surprised if we are not willing to change the scenery that brings normalcy to these types of behaviors.
In a world where entertainment often blurs the lines between reality and fantasy, it’s essential to remain vigilant about the narratives we internalize. I’d like to see a new Grammy category that focuses on music that uplifts and inspires. Humanity needs media that nourishes the soul and elevates the spirit, not diminishes it.
Conscious consumption extends beyond music awards ceremonies; it encompasses all forms of media that permeate our daily lives. From television shows to social media feeds, we are bombarded with a barrage of images and messages that shape our worldview and influence our behavior.
Navigating this landscape requires a delicate balance between staying informed and safeguarding our mental and emotional well-being. It’s about being mindful of the content we engage with and its potential impact on our thoughts, feelings, and actions.
My intention is to emphasize unity and compassion as all beings are connected and influencing each other vibrationally. My full rant on Youtube can be seen by clicking the photo (but finish the article first! 😉)
Seeing the numbness people had not noticing the hidden messages that were in plain sight, is a reminder that while differences may abound, our shared humanity transcends the barriers of race, religion, and ideology.
In a world rife with division and polarization, the call to “shine your light” resonates as a beacon of hope — a reminder that unity and understanding are within reach if we choose to embrace them.
So, how can we navigate the waters of media consumption with mindfulness and intentionality? It begins with cultivating a sense of awareness — a willingness to question the narratives we encounter and the values they espouse.
It involves being mindful of the emotions and sensations that arise within us as we engage with media, recognizing that our internal responses are a reflection of our deepest desires, fears, and aspirations.
It requires discernment — distinguishing between what uplifts and inspires and what diminishes and divides. It’s about choosing media that aligns with our values and fosters a sense of connection and community. Conscious media consumption is about reclaiming our sovereignty and recognizing that we have the power to shape our reality and influence the world around us through the stories we tell and the messages we amplify. In other cases, programs we boycott or speak our truth about instead of brushing it off.
As we navigate the ever-changing landscape of media and entertainment, let us remember the power of intentionality — the power to choose media that nourishes the soul, uplifts the spirit, and inspires positive change in the world.
Please don’t turn a blind eye to mind programming that is happening through entertainment. It’s time to engage from a place of mindfulness and compassion while recognizing that true transformation begins from within.
